Summary of 2010 to 2019
This 2010 to 2019 period in NU Rowing history was the second decade of John Pojednic as Head Coach. During this period NU saw five other Associate or Assistant coaches supporting Coach Pojednic. This included four former NU oarsman, David Burke, Dan Walsh, Ted Sobolewski and Justin Jones. In addition, Ted Benford was an Associate Coach and went on to be the Executive Director of Community Rowing in Boston. As the 2010 and 2011 seasons started, there was a need to build team depth with new freshman. Freshman eights won Bronze at the 2011 Sprints and Silver at the 2012 Sprints and Bronze at the 2012 IRA. This would help the varsity level team succeed with a number of medals in the middle of the decade. This included Varsity Bronze at 2013 Sprints and Silver at the 2015 Sprints. The 2V won Gold at the 2014 Sprints and Bronze at the 2015 Sprints. While the later part of 2017 to 2019 had a no eight boat medals, there were a number of times the team entered the championship finals at the Sprints and IRA.
2011 Team History
The 2010–2011 season was a rebuilding year for the program. Ted Benford joined as Associate Head Coach at the start of the season, bringing new energy and direction. This year’s freshman class was the first to be recruited following the discontinuation of the football program, which freed up several boats' worth of scholarships. These additional resources allowed the coaching staff to bring in a strong group of talented athletes, forming the foundation for the program’s future.
By the end of the fall season, Coach Pojednic shifted his focus toward developing the freshmen and building for the long term, while Coach Benford took over leadership of the varsity squad. While the varsity was unable to consistently field both an eight and a four, the freshmen emerged as a bright spot.
