The 2010's - Building to Mid-Decade Success

Thanks to Tom Gates '73, Erik Wessel '14, Dale Jordan '16

Summary of 2010 to 2019

This 2010 to 2019 period in NU Rowing history was the second decade of John Pojednic as Head Coach.  During this period NU saw five other Associate or Assistant coaches supporting Coach Pojednic.  This included four former NU oarsman, David Burke, Dan Walsh, Ted Sobolewski and Justin Jones.  In addition, Ted Benford was an Associate Coach and went on to be the Executive Director of Community Rowing in Boston.  As the 2010 and 2011 seasons started, there was a need to build team depth with new freshman.  Freshman eights won Bronze at the 2011 Sprints and Silver at the 2012 Sprints and Bronze at the 2012 IRA.  This would help the varsity level team succeed with a number of medals in the middle of the decade.  This included Varsity Bronze at 2013 Sprints and Silver at the 2015 Sprints.  The 2V won Gold at the 2014 Sprints and Bronze at the 2015 Sprints. While the later part of 2017 to 2019 had a no eight boat medals, there were a number of times the team entered the championship finals at the Sprints and IRA.

2014 Team History

By Erik Wessel ’14

The 2013- 2014 season started faster than usual; following the normal ‘end’ of the previous racing season, twenty oarsmen had made their way to England to compete in the Henley Royal Regatta, where the Varsity lost narrowly to a Leander Club & Molesey B.C. boat comprised of many British team rowers. Arriving in Boston in September, the team had a palpable energy, excited to build on last year’s results.

The Head of the Charles came with some encouraging results - the 1V and 2V both placed second among their respective college boats in the Championship event (5th and 19th overall, respectively), and the Club 8 earned a bronze medal demonstrating depth in the program. In the Foot of the Charles, weeks later, mixed results in small boats ended the fall season and the team transitioned into a tough winter training season.
