The 2010's - Building to Mid-Decade Success

Thanks to Tom Gates '73, Erik Wessel '14, Dale Jordan '16

Summary of 2010 to 2019

This 2010 to 2019 period in NU Rowing history was the second decade of John Pojednic as Head Coach.  During this period NU saw five other Associate or Assistant coaches supporting Coach Pojednic.  This included four former NU oarsman, David Burke, Dan Walsh, Ted Sobolewski and Justin Jones.  In addition, Ted Benford was an Associate Coach and went on to be the Executive Director of Community Rowing in Boston.  As the 2010 and 2011 seasons started, there was a need to build team depth with new freshman.  Freshman eights won Bronze at the 2011 Sprints and Silver at the 2012 Sprints and Bronze at the 2012 IRA.  This would help the varsity level team succeed with a number of medals in the middle of the decade.  This included Varsity Bronze at 2013 Sprints and Silver at the 2015 Sprints.  The 2V won Gold at the 2014 Sprints and Bronze at the 2015 Sprints. While the later part of 2017 to 2019 had a no eight boat medals, there were a number of times the team entered the championship finals at the Sprints and IRA.

2013 Team History

Tyler Underhill ‘13, 2013 Team Co-Captain and Tom Gates ’73

The 2012-2013 season started with great anticipation and proved to live up to expectations.  It saw a major change in IRA rules which allowed freshman rowers to compete in varsity events.  From the start of the year, the incoming freshman made an impact, with two freshman rowers, Francisco Mendes and Eric Winkert, competing for the 1V in their first collegiate race at the annual Head of the Charles Regatta. The 1V placed 6th overall in the Championship 8 event and 5th of other collegiate 1V boats. NU’s best result, also in the Championship 8 event, came with a 2V 2nd place among 2V collegiate entries.

New to the racing schedule for the 2012 fall season was the Princeton Chase Regatta where the 1V finished 2nd of 17 and the 2v 2nd of 15 boats.  The 3V was 2nd of 6 and the 4V 4th of 5.  There were also (4) entries in the V4+ event with the “A” boat 5th of 15, “B” 2nd of 13, “C” 1st of 10 and “D” 4th of 7.
