The 2010's - Building to Mid-Decade Success
Thanks to Tom Gates '73, Erik Wessel '14, Dale Jordan '16
Summary of 2010 to 2019
This 2010 to 2019 period in NU Rowing history was the second decade of John Pojednic as Head Coach. During this period NU saw five other Associate or Assistant coaches supporting Coach Pojednic. This included four former NU oarsman, David Burke, Dan Walsh, Ted Sobolewski and Justin Jones. In addition, Ted Benford was an Associate Coach and went on to be the Executive Director of Community Rowing in Boston. As the 2010 and 2011 seasons started, there was a need to build team depth with new freshman. Freshman eights won Bronze at the 2011 Sprints and Silver at the 2012 Sprints and Bronze at the 2012 IRA. This would help the varsity level team succeed with a number of medals in the middle of the decade. This included Varsity Bronze at 2013 Sprints and Silver at the 2015 Sprints. The 2V won Gold at the 2014 Sprints and Bronze at the 2015 Sprints. While the later part of 2017 to 2019 had a no eight boat medals, there were a number of times the team entered the championship finals at the Sprints and IRA.
2017 Team History
By Trevor Appier '18, 2017 Team Captain
2017 looked to be a promising year as the team had grown from 2 eights in 2016 back up to 3 eights for 2017. We started the Fall off with a lot of base training and not particularly great results at the Charles in the Champ categories, but a strong 2nd place Club 8 that had many younger athletes in it. As training ramped up, we were able to bounce back and finish off the Fall very strong, winning the Foot of the Charles in both the 4+ and 8+ over Harvard, Brown and BU.
The Spring of 2017 was a challenging season as many races were decided by some unfortunate crabs and waterfowl incidents at the Arlett Cup, Eastern Sprints, and IRAs. Despite these incidents, NU had a sweep of Brown for the Dreissigacker Cup and retained the Congram cup against Wisconsin. Besides the Brown wins the 2V took another from BU and the 3V Wisconsin. The season ended with a win in the Petite Final for a 7th place finish at the IRA in the Varsity, 11th for the 2V and 8th for the 3V.
