Thanks to Tom Gates '73, Erik Wessel '14, Dale Jordan '16
Summary of 2010 to 2019
This 2010 to 2019 period in NU Rowing history was the second decade of John Pojednic as Head Coach. During this period NU saw five other Associate or Assistant coaches supporting Coach Pojednic. This included four former NU oarsman, David Burke, Dan Walsh, Ted Sobolewski and Justin Jones. In addition, Ted Benford was an Associate Coach and went on to be the Executive Director of Community Rowing in Boston. As the 2010 and 2011 seasons started, there was a need to build team depth with new freshman. Freshman eights won Bronze at the 2011 Sprints and Silver at the 2012 Sprints and Bronze at the 2012 IRA. This would help the varsity level team succeed with a number of medals in the middle of the decade. This included Varsity Bronze at 2013 Sprints and Silver at the 2015 Sprints. The 2V won Gold at the 2014 Sprints and Bronze at the 2015 Sprints. While the later part of 2017 to 2019 had a no eight boat medals, there were a number of times the team entered the championship finals at the Sprints and IRA.
2018 Team History
Andrew Maglio ‘19, 2018 Team Captain
We were lucky enough to do two camps in 17/18 to Sebastian, FL. This was one of the first years at Canal 54 and the team locked in some strong km’s in the pairs and 8s. Our key per diem beneficiaries were Publix, Moon Wok, Jersey Mikes and Wawa and Hawaiian shirts became required uniform.
The racing season kicked off with the San Diego Crew Classic in April. The format for the event was two dual heats on Saturday followed by a six-boat final on Sunday. The Varsity raced the Burk Cup dual against Penn in heat 1 on the Saturday, winning by 12.9 seconds, and lost the afternoon dual against Cal by 2.7 seconds. After keeping the local taqueria economy bolstered for the remainder of the year, we came back again for the finals on Sunday with In the six-boat Sunday final, it quickly became a three boat race to come third, where Cal (5:50.492) eventually won with Yale in second (5:52.724) by 2.3 seconds, while the Varsity finished in third (5:54.867), with fourth place Stanford 18 seconds behind.
