The 2010's - Building to Mid-Decade Success
Thanks to Tom Gates '73, Erik Wessel '14, Dale Jordan '16
Summary of 2010 to 2019
This 2010 to 2019 period in NU Rowing history was the second decade of John Pojednic as Head Coach. During this period NU saw five other Associate or Assistant coaches supporting Coach Pojednic. This included four former NU oarsman, David Burke, Dan Walsh, Ted Sobolewski and Justin Jones. In addition, Ted Benford was an Associate Coach and went on to be the Executive Director of Community Rowing in Boston. As the 2010 and 2011 seasons started, there was a need to build team depth with new freshman. Freshman eights won Bronze at the 2011 Sprints and Silver at the 2012 Sprints and Bronze at the 2012 IRA. This would help the varsity level team succeed with a number of medals in the middle of the decade. This included Varsity Bronze at 2013 Sprints and Silver at the 2015 Sprints. The 2V won Gold at the 2014 Sprints and Bronze at the 2015 Sprints. While the later part of 2017 to 2019 had a no eight boat medals, there were a number of times the team entered the championship finals at the Sprints and IRA.
2019 Team History
By Grayson Steigler ‘20, 2019 Team Captain
Early in the fall, the team and coaching staff faced an unexpected setback when Coach Pojednic had a serious cycling accident. This took him away from coaching to focus on recovery, leaving Coach Sobolewski to take the lead. Sobolewski trained us hard, crafting each session with a focus on low rate, power-based exercises both on the erg and the water. Mondays kicked off with erg tests that seeded the Tuesday night Long Pairs Race (LPR) from Mass Ave to Arsenal, setting the stage for the week's 8+ races. Each session was critical for the oarsman’s progression through the week, ultimately seeding the highly competitive Saturday practice: 2x HOCR and a Harvard Stadium (40 flights, of course).
When the team headed to the Head of the Housatonic to race Yale, it was a chance to gear up for the highly anticipated Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR). Despite what felt like a disappointing result for the Varsity at HOCR, the JV performed exceptionally well, fueling the drive as we geared up for the Foot, where the whole team excelled.
