The 2020's - Program Transitions
Pandemic and Coaching Transitions

Thanks to Rex Berger '22 and Tom Gates '73

The 2020 decade began coming off a strong 2019 year with the 1V finishing 5th in the nation at the IRA Regatta.  There was a lot of anticipation for improvement and growth of the Men’s Program as the decade started.  But the momentum was dashed in the first part of the decade by the Covid19 pandemic that started in early 2020. This pandemic would impact development of the teams, recruiting and coaching as the program transitioned through 3 head coaches from 2021 to 2023.  More to come as the decade develops.

2020 Team History

NU got the season started with the Fall head races. First, they took on Yale, and Syracuse the Head of the Housatonic. The 1V and 2V finished 5th and 6th behind Yale’s A and B boats, Syracuse and Brown. The 1V was stroked by Jasper Angl and the 2v by Rhett Burns. The 3V stroked by Leif Carlson and the 4V stroked by Gerry Johnson finished 12th and 17th respectively out of a 21 boat field.

In the Championship 8 race at the Head of the Charles the 1V again stroked by Jasper Angl finished 11th (6th among 13 collegiate 1V entries) and the 2V stroked by Elias Kun finished 22nd (4th of 6 2V entries). In the Club 8 race the 3V stroked by Spencer Brennessel finished 7th (5th of 20 3V collegiate entries) and the 4V stroked by Gerry Johnson finished 11th  (2nd of 5 4V collegiate entries). The Foot of the Charles wound up the Fall season.  The 1V stroked by Gus Kynast finished 1st, 7 secs ahead of 2nd place Harvard! The 2V stroked by Brendan McCarthy took third behind Harvard’s 1V and ahead of Brown’s 1V. In the 4+ race, NU stroked by Rhett Burns finished 3rd, just 0.2 sec behind Brown.
