The 2020's - Program Transitions
Pandemic and Coaching Transitions

Thanks to Rex Berger '22 and Tom Gates '73

The 2020 decade began coming off a strong 2019 year with the 1V finishing 5th in the nation at the IRA Regatta.  There was a lot of anticipation for improvement and growth of the Men’s Program as the decade started.  But the momentum was dashed in the first part of the decade by the Covid19 pandemic that started in early 2020. This pandemic would impact development of the teams, recruiting and coaching as the program transitioned through 3 head coaches from 2021 to 2023.  More to come as the decade develops.

2023 Team History

Coach Alex Perkins’ first full year at the helm got off to a good start with the Fall head races. First they took on powerhouses Yale and Brown in the Head of the Housatonic. While all 4 boats were bested by their respective Yale and Brown boats, they gave strong performances. In the Championship 8 race at the Head of the Charles the 1V stroked by grad student co-captain Rhett Burns and with co-captain Alexander Abuhoff in 2 seat finished 4th among 13 collegiate 1V entries and the 2V finished 3rd of 4 2V entries. In the Club 8 race the 3V finished 5thout of 16 3V collegiate entries and the 4V finished 6th of 6 4V collegiate entries. To wind up the Fall season, the 1V took second at the Foot of the Charles just a length behind Harvard and 5 lengths ahead of BU. The 2V and 3V boats took some revenge from their HOCR races by besting their BU rivals.
